How

If you’re already immersed in the nappy-changing journey, you know what we’re talking about here. Doing research as a first-time parent? Let’s get you acquainted.

Raising a kid has a lot of amazing moments… but we know there are those days when things aren’t all muted tones and perfectly spotless families meditating on a beach. Sometimes, you’re up to your elbows in the proverbial. That's right, it happens. We’re talking about that wet, brown patch on the back of your baby's suit when you pick them up and you think to yourself: there are wet nappies, there are soiled nappies, but where are we now?

You are unfortunately in enemy territory - it's called a 'blowout' or also known as poonami’s or code brown. It’s a perfect storm of every nappy-related hazard you can imagine.

But fear not, we're here to break down the best way to avoid this unpleasant situation.

1. Pick a nappy with proven absorbency

Choose a nappy that will do the hard work for you. Messy poos are going to happen, but with kids – the best cure is prevention and a nappy with leakproof sides and a proven track record of absorbency is imperative to avoid blowouts. Comfy Koalas Eco Nappies have an anti-leakage guard which provides up to 730ml of absorbency. That's A LOT of wees and poos. On top of this – our absorbent, FSC Certified wood pulp traps moisture fast without plastic, ensuring baby stays dry, as well as rash free.

2. Change often but don't waste nappies

You learn fast that not changing your baby's nappy frequently enough will exponentially increase your blowout rate. Great absorbency can only go so far to contain a bomb, but sticking to a frequent change schedule will make sure the anti-leakage isn’t exhausted. But the best way to ensure you're changing frequently enough, without wasting nappies, is to choose a nappy with a wetness indicator. Comfy Koalas Eco Nappies have a natural, non-toxic wetness indicator so you know when it's time to change without disturbing your bub.

3. Perfect fit is essential - here's how to check

A common cause of blowouts is an ill fit. Newborn nappies usually don’t have too much variance as they’re only designed for the first few weeks from birth but as your bubs get older, there's lots to check. Firstly, match your baby's weight to our nappy size guide. Secondly, keep check on the way the nappy looks and feels on their waist and around their thighs. Once you engage the nappy tabs, the waist should fit snug without the tabs overlapping, but also not so far apart that you allow the sides to open too wide. If your baby's nappy looks like it's sitting too low on the waist, that's another sign it's time to go up a size.

 A perfect fit!

4. Arm yourself with backups, always

When all else fails: Make sure you have enough nappies to deal with whatever comes your way. Also have 2 x spare changes of clothes in your baby bag, car, and handbag (we have stashes everywhere) plus extra wipes and more nappies than you think you'll need.

But on those days when it just feels like no amount of preparation can help you face the situation, we are here to remind you that this stage is fleeting, and it too shall pass (baby poo firms up as they get older - we promise). You’re doing great, mama!
